Can I Reverse Diabetes Without Drugs?

This question is frequently asked by patients who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body cannot make enough insulin or use the insulin that is produced adequately. This is called insulin resistance and accounts for over 90% of the people with diabetes. Particularly in the early stages type 2 diabetes can be reversed and controlled without medication.

Renata Nyleve Editor of the “How To Reverse Diabetes” website — http://www.HowToReverseDiabetes.org — pointed out;

“…Since type 2 diabetics are frequently overweight, the first step to controlling the disease without medication is to begin a weight loss program. The body is producing insulin. By eating less food and choosing foods that are low in refined sugars which require insulin to move out of the blood stream, blood sugar can be lowered with diet alone. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grain cereals and breads, along with lean protein found in fish and poultry are excellent foods to aid in the control of blood sugar…”

Make sure that the total calorie content of the diet is below what is expended each day. This will result in weight loss which will also aid in lowering the blood glucose. A diet consisting of three small meals and three nutritious snacks spread throughout the waking hours works best to regulate blood sugar. Each of these feeding should be carefully measured and contain protein which is metabolized slower preventing blood sugar spikes.

Exercise is also an effective way to lower blood sugar. Do not rely on a scheduled workout. Add increased physical activity to the daily routine. Park the car and walk when possible. Take the stairs. Use coffee and lunch breaks as an opportunity to get out and walk around the block. All of these activities will help to lower blood sugar.

“…While many type 2 diabetics take medication to control their blood sugar, it is possible to keep blood sugars in the normal range and reverse diabetes without drugs. This requires life altering changes in diet and activity levels but can be accomplished with determination…” added R. Nyleve.
