An Overview of the American Diabetes Association Diet

A good diet is always an excellent practice, but for people with diabetes it is crucial to their health that they follow healthy eating patterns. This is why the American Diabetes Association diet plan was created. By following the American Diabetes Association’s guidelines you will be able to live a healthier life and manage your diabetes disease.

The American Diabetes Association will recommend that a person with diabetes should eat from the four major food groups. Which are proteins (meat, eggs, fish, poultry, nuts), dairy (low fat milk, yogurt, cottage cheese), whole grains (breads, cereal), and vegetables and fruits.

By eating within these four food groups you will ensure that you will receive all of the nutrients your body needs to function. The American Diabetes Association recommends that you eat complex carbohydrates in moderation as well as proteins because they are a good sustainable source of energy for your body. The carbohydrates will cause your blood sugar levels to rise so it is important to eat them with proteins that will bring your blood sugar level back down.

High fiber foods and foods with a glycemic index that is low are highly recommended for people with diabetes. You will want to avoid foods that are high in fat. You do need fat in your diet but you need healthy fats and you do not need them in excessive quantities. Cutting sodium out from your diet is also highly recommended. Also unnecessary sugars and alcohol are not recommended as well.

The American Diabetes Association diet recommendations are easy and simple to follow. As always though, consult with your primary doctor before going forward with a new diet. You may have other health issues and will need to work with your doctor to find out what food you should and should not be eating.
